ABDM and ABHA: a practical guide for small clinics

The Ayushman Bharat Digital Mission connects patients, doctors and facilities. What ABHA, HFR and HPR mean for a small clinic, and how records are shared only with the patient's consent.

The Ayushman Bharat Digital Mission (ABDM) is building the rails for India's digital health records. For a small clinic it can sound like paperwork. In practice it comes down to a few building blocks.

The building blocks

  • ABHA (Ayushman Bharat Health Account): a health ID that patients create and control. It lets their records follow them between providers.
  • HFR (Health Facility Registry): the registry of health facilities. Your clinic is listed once and becomes identifiable to the network.
  • HPR (Healthcare Professionals Registry): the registry of verified doctors and other professionals.

Consent comes first

Records do not flow automatically. A patient approves each request to share, for a purpose and for a period of time. MargDoc Pro checks that approval before anything leaves the clinic and keeps a record of every share, so the clinic can always show who saw what and why.

What changes at the front desk

Very little. Staff can link a patient's ABHA at registration, the doctor works as usual, and finished records are packaged in the national standard format behind the scenes. If the ABDM gateway is unavailable, clinical work carries on and the sharing queues until it is back.

Where to start

Register the facility, make sure each doctor's professional registration is in order, and start offering ABHA linking to patients who want it. Interoperability grows one consented record at a time.
